On May 18, the 20th anniversary of BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA) and the groundbreaking ceremony for the BMW sixth-generation high-voltage battery project were held in Shenyang.
BBA was established in 2003 and has invested nearly 100 billion yuan since 2010, with an annual production capacity of 830,000 units, which has driven the landing of 120 core suppliers in Liaoning. After 20 years of development, Shenyang has become the most important production base of the BMW Group worldwide. During the ceremony, the BMW Group announced that it will commence the production of the new generation of all-electric BMW models in Shenyang in 2026. At the same time, the BMW sixth-generation high-voltage battery project, which complements the new models, also officially started operation on May 18. The total investment for this project is over 10 billion yuan and will create over 2,000 new job opportunities.
Twenty years ago, BMW set its sights on Liaoning and established BBA in cooperation with the province, planting the “seeds of hope”. Over the past 20 years, BBA’s development has accelerated, its production and operations have expanded, and its quality and efficiency have continued to improve. Just last year, it achieved a series of landmark achievements: the all-new BMW i3 was launched; the BBA Plant Dadong Extension was successfully completed; the BBA Plant Lydia site was officially put into operation; and the 5 millionth vehicle successfully rolled off the production line. BBA’s rapid development in Shenyang is a result of the deep integration of “BMW quality” and “Liaoning manufacturing”, further demonstrating that Liaoning is fertile grounds for innovation and entrepreneurship.
At the ceremony, the BMW Group reiterated its confidence and commitment to the Chinese market, emphasizing its intention to work together with Chinese partners to co-create a win-win future. The company also announced its plan to accelerate investment and expansion in Shenyang, focusing on local research and development, production, and iteration of high-voltage batteries for electric vehicle models, further implementing BMW’s strategy of being “Electric, Digital and Circular”, and fully integrating into the grand blueprint of new energy industry development in Liaoning Province, and in China.
