The Yalu River Estuary Wetland: The Resting Area for the Largest Migratory Bird Population in the World

The Yalu River Estuary Wetland, a national nature reserve, is located at the northernmost end of China’s coastline. It is located in Donggang County-level City, Dandong City in southeastern Liaoning Province. West of the Yalu River estuary, it covers a total area of 81,400 hectares. The nature reserve was established in 1987 and upgraded to a national nature reserve in December 1997. In July 1999, it joined the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership. In 2004, it established a sister nature reserve relationship with Pukorokoro Miranda Naturalist Trust (PMNT) in New Zealand. In 2014, it was awarded the title of “Best Resting Area for Shorebirds” by Wetlands International. In 2017, it was nominated by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration as a Heritage Site of Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Coast of Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf of China.

The Yalu River Estuary Wetland is recognized as the resting area for the largest migratory bird population in the world by experts and researchers at home and abroad. It is the most important gateway and staging post on the migratory route of birds in Northeast Asia and has significant international influences.
