On June 20, the Information Office of Liaoning Provincial People’s Government held the fifth press conference of a thematic series titled “Building a First-Class Business Environment”. The conference provided an overview of Liaoning’s efforts this year to build a livable environment, improve urban infrastructure construction, enhance the appearance of the city, and upgrade the quality of city life.
In recent years, Liaoning has played an active role in building a sponge city. To achieve that goal, it has vigorously upgraded the old urban drainage pipe network and drainage facilities, steadily renovated the rainwater and sewage diversion system, as well as improved the treatment of waterlogging-prone areas. A total of 1,658 kilometers of drainage pipes are built or upgraded, 10,297.8 kilometers of drainage pipes are dredged, and 143,000 manhole covers are installed or repaired.
As the next step, Liaoning will employ the “three strengthening measures” to build a sponge city. Firstly, it will strengthen the drainage management and waterlogging prevention facilities. Secondly, it will strengthen the rainwater and sewage diversion renovation. Thirdly, it will strengthen the demonstration and guidance role of key cities. That is to say, the provincial government will assist Shenyang and Huludao to complete the demonstration work of sponge city construction systematically within the entire city, formulating successful experiences and practices that can be replicated and promoted in other places.
Since the beginning of this year, Liaoning has been working hard to improve the livable environment, firmly keeping the bottom line of ecological environment protection. At the end of May, the incidence of heavy pollution weather in Liaoning was 0.8%, meeting the national assessment requirements. Additionally, 83.3% of the monitored surface water quality in Liaoning meets the national standards of Grade I-III, an increase of 1.3 percentage points year-on-year.
In the future, Liaoning will continue its efforts to protect the blue sky, clear water, and pure land, focusing on solving outstanding ecological and environmental problems and improving the living environment for residents. At the same time, it will be fully committed to serving the overall economic and social development, intensifying high-level protection of the ecological environment to fuel high-quality economic development and create a high-quality life.
