We would like to record our lives in different ways. We write, paint or take photos for feelings, scenery or special moments. But in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, we have got a cool and impressive way: PAPER CUTTING!

With a pair of scissors and a piece of paper, someone can cut out beautiful moments in just two minutes and forever keep the unforgettable memories. The man with such magical skills is the master of paper cutting, Feng Yuanping, the representative inheritor of Feng Yuanping Paper Cutting, a city-level intangible cultural heritage project in Shenyang. His paper cutting works combine excellent skills and creativity, and integrate Northeast Chinese culture into cultural innovation to form his own artistic style.

At their first meeting, the Turkmenistan girl Bibi was impressed by Mr. Feng’s skills. Spirited dragons, flying butterflies, peacocks spreading tail feathers... Within split seconds, the papers in Feng Yuanping’s hands were transformed into vivid artworks with different shapes and styles, leaving Bibi much amazed. It often takes just two minutes for Feng Yuanping to craft a human figure, while a more delicate artwork can take about half a year of meticulous effort.

Watching Mr. Feng cutting paper quite skillfully with scissors in his hand, Bibi also wanted to give it a try. The beginning is the most difficult part, and It’s no exception for Bibi. She did not know how to hold the scissors and papers and where to start. Following Mr. Feng’s instruction, “move the paper but not the scissors, keep a calm mind, and maintain a slow hand movement”, Bibi adjusted for a little while and began to make progress. After a while, a dynamic and cute little dragon was cut out. “Paper cutting is really cool!” Bibi jumped excitedly.

Paper cutting, also known as paper carving, enjoys a long history. Regarded as the “art on the point of a knife”, it is the national and world intangible cultural heritage. A piece of light paper can carry many profound skills. Paper cutting not only embodies multiple elements such as history, culture, art, craftsmanship, but also shows the spirit, dynamism, and vitality of Chinese people. A piece of red paper and a pair of scissors bear the art and pass it from generation to generation.

The experience of paper cutting not only broadens Bibi’s horizons, but also shows the beauty of Chinese skill and Chinese wisdom to her.
