2024-01-23

On January 23, the Information Office of Liaoning Provincial People’s Government held the third press conference of the series on the economic performance of Liaoning in 2023, presenting a comprehensive overview, major achievements, distinctive features, and highlights of the province’s agricultural and rural economy in 2023.

In 2023, Liaoning’s agricultural and rural economy indicators surpassed the national average for the first time in three years. Notably, the value-added of the primary industry increased by 4.7% year-on-year, exceeding the national average by 0.6 percentage points. The per capita disposable income of rural residents increased by 7.9% year-on-year, surpassing the national average by 0.2 percentage points.

Throughout the year, Liaoning achieved a grain sown area of 53.676 million mu (3.5784 million hectares), surpassing the national target by 646,000 mu (43,066.7 hectares). This marked the third consecutive year with a stable sown area of over 53 million mu (3.5333 million hectares). The total grain output reached 51.27 billion jin (25.635 billion kilograms), setting a historical record, with an average yield of 955.1 jin (477.55 kilograms) per mu, ranking second among major grain-producing provinces. Vegetable and fruit production increased by 4.5% year-on-year, meat production increased by 6.2% year-on-year, and aquatic product production increased by 3.9% year-on-year, effectively ensuring a stable supply of the “vegetable basket” for the public.

Last year, Liaoning launched the construction of a food industry powerhouse, vigorously promoting the development of two 100-billion-yuan industry clusters in grain and oil, as well as livestock and poultry. The output values of these two sectors increased by 6% and 7%, respectively, demonstrating the initial success of the food industry powerhouse construction.

Meanwhile, Liaoning received 53.55 million visitors in leisure agriculture and rural tourism, experiencing a year-on-year increase of 43%, with operating income reaching 11.5 billion yuan, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 47%. The development of new rural industry formats showed strong momentum. Additionally, Liaoning successfully hosted the 13th Liaoning International Agricultural Expo, continuously enhancing the popularity and influence of the Liaoning agricultural brand.

In 2024, Liaoning aims to maintain a stable grain sown area of over 53 million mu (3.5333 million hectares), ensuring a consistent grain output of approximately 50 billion jin (25 billion kilograms). The province plans to construct or renovate agricultural facilities covering an area of 100,000 mu (6,666.667 hectares). Furthermore, there will be a strong emphasis on the development of large-scale facility aquaculture in deep-sea and far-sea areas, with the establishment of four national-level marine ranching demonstration zones. Efforts will also be made to strengthen and optimize specialty industries, prioritizing the development of several 10-billion-yuan-scale specialty industries focusing on  cherries, strawberries, sea cucumbers, and other advantageous varieties.
