Lei Feng is a name echoing in our ears in spring. With the approaching of the 61st Lei Feng Memorial Day, 27 international students from Liaoning Petrochemical University once again visited the Lei Feng Memorial Hall in Fushun City, Liaoning Province and sang “Learn from Lei Feng’s Good Example” in not so proficient Chinese.

Fushun is the second hometown of Lei Feng. Liaoning Petrochemical University, located in Fushun, has always been trying to integrate the spirit of Lei Feng into the education for international students. There is a team of international volunteers in International Education College of this university. They have different skin colors but share a common role model - Lei Feng.

At the beginning of the new semester, many new students joined the international volunteers. They visited the Lei Feng Memorial Hall and sang the song “Learn from Lei Feng’s Good Example” together. They like this song not only because of its ear-catching lyrics and rhythm, but also because the spirit of the times conveyed by the song resonates with them. Wang Yang (Appiah Priscilla), an international student from Ghana, believes that “the spirit of Lei Feng embodies love, giving and dedication”. She learns the spirit of Lei Feng by visiting the Lei Feng Memorial Hall and reading Lei Feng’s diary in her daily life. She follows the international volunteers into hospitals and local communities to hold activities themed on learning from Lei Feng.

“I knew about Lei Feng when I first arrived in Fushun, and after learning more about his story, I have been deeply impressed by his spirit.” Kurbonov, an international student from Tajikistan, said. He often goes to the university’s Lei Feng Spirit Hall to learn about Lei Feng’s life story, and he also spends his extracurricular time teaching children English in the local community near the university. “Lei Feng is my role model and idol, and doing good deeds like him can make me a better person.” Kurbonov said, “I want to bring the spirit of Lei Feng to Tajikistan.”

Nourished with the spirit of Lei Feng in Fushun, the international students have already regarded him as their role model. They are practicing his spirit with their own actions. They want to learn from Lei Feng, and bring his spirit to their home countries, so that it can be spread to more places in the world.
