Liaodong Bay Attracts Spotted Seals
2024-03-06

The spotted seal, with its round shiny eyes, plump belly and brown-spotted body, thrives along the coast of Liaodong Bay. Known as the “elf of Liaodong Bay”, the spotted seal always has adorkable facial expressions and body postures. Under first-class national protection in China, the spotted seal is the only pinniped marine mammal to breed in Chinese waters. Listed as an endangered species, it is now regarded as the “giant panda of the sea”.

Every November, spotted seals gather in Liaodong Bay to reproduce and nurture their offspring on the sea ice. From the following March to April, some spotted seals will migrate to the waters near Qinhuangdao for food and habitat. Every May, they swim out of Liaodong Bay.
