Liaohe Old Street in Yingkou—Recalling Past Prosperity and Discovering Beauty of Intangible Cultural Heritage
2024-12-17

More than 150 years ago, there was a bustling commercial street along the bank of the Liaohe River in Yingkou, just like Wangfujing in Beijing and Nanjing Road in Shanghai, which is now the site of the Liaohe Old Street, and the cradle of Yingkou’s economy and culture.

The Liaohe Old Street in Yingkou was once known as “the First Street Beyond the Shanhaiguan Pass” and “the Ever-Bright City in Northern China”, and now it has become a nationally renowned historical and cultural street. The old street possesses an over-1300-meter-long historical block, which is praised as the earliest and best-preserved century-old shop museum in Northeast China.

Strolling through the old street, one can admire a variety of old buildings and retro-style bronze sculptures, and experience the original and rustic folk culture. It feels like stepping into a magical time-travel tunnel, letting you instantly recall the centenary prosperity of Yingkou.

As night falls, the Liaohe Old Street becomes even more bustling. The buildings inside the street, such as the xiangsheng theater, coffee house, time-honored restaurant, silver jewelry shop and antique store, are bathed in glittering lights, full of warmth and vitality. Many intangible cultural heritage projects are also showcased here, such as Manchu embroidery, traditional pinwheel making and paper cutting, drawing an endless stream of Chinese and foreign tourists to jointly witness the reviving glory of the old street.
