Rooted in Gaizhou, Liaoning Province, the northern-style Li’s lanterns trace back to the imperial craftsmanship of the Qing Dynasty. With bamboo frames and silk paper coverings, they integrate poetry, paintings and legends, which is one of southern Liaoning’s intangible cultural heritage (ICH) treasures.

The post-95s representative inheritor Li Maopeng injects vitality into this ICH. He uses motor drive and PLC programming to bring lanterns to life, and upgrades the crafting process with S-shaped lighting and hand-spray inking. The lanterns also features trendy Chinese animation elements and voice interaction, illuminating the festive atmosphere in various places, and they have become a cultural link between tradition and modernity.
