If there’s one painting that can instantly transport you to the Jiangnan region of southeastern China more than 260 years ago, immersing you in the vibrant bustle of everyday life, it’s Prosperous Suzhou.

Among the many treasures at the Liaoning Provincial Museum, Prosperous Suzhou stands out as truly unique. Unlike the serene detachment often found in traditional landscape paintings, this scroll overflows with the warmth and vibrancy of daily life. Created over several years by Xu Yang, a Qing Dynasty court painter, it has long been described as the pinnacle of Qing Dynasty genre painting, depicting scenes from everyday life. Now, to the excitement of art lovers and collectors, this legendary masterpiece is available as a digital collectible on Topnod (Jingtan), a digital collectibles trading platform.

What makes Prosperous Suzhou such a sensation? The handscroll stretches more than 12 meters in length, twice the length of Zhang Zeduan’s Along the River During the Qingming Festival. With a realistic approach, Xu Yang captured a sweeping panorama of Suzhou in its mid-18th-century heyday. More than just a painting, it is a vivid pictorial record of Qing-period Suzhou. The entire scroll painstakingly depicts over 4,000 human figures, more than 2,000 buildings, and around 200 shop signs. From nobles and officials to peddlers and laborers, from grand mansions to humble roadside tea stalls, it encompasses people from all walks of life. Unrolling the scroll is like taking an immersive walking tour through Suzhou over 260 years ago. The composition begins at Lingyan Mountain, passes through Mudu Town, Shihu Lake, Xumen Gate and Changmen Gate, and concludes at Tiger Hill. Xu Yang captured everything: Suzhou’s scenic landscapes, the clamor of its markets, its agriculture and commerce, its government offices and folk customs, all within a single scroll. This complex yet orderly composition gives the painting a majestic sweep while being rich in detail. It has been described as an encyclopedia of social life in Suzhou during the Qing Dynasty. It serves as an invaluable resource for understanding Jiangnan culture, traditional urban civilization, and the spirit of ancient commerce.

Yet, due to its enormous size and fragile paper, Prosperous Suzhou has rarely been displayed in full at exhibitions. Visitors could often do no more than steal a hurried glimpse of one section through protective glass. Today, digital technology can now overcome this limitation, presenting the entire 12-meter-long masterpiece with striking clarity and completeness.
