The Snake Island Laotie Mountain Migratory Bird Sanctuary is located in Lyushunkou District of Dalian City, Northeast China’s Liaoning Province, with a total area of approximately 1909.35 hectares. Laotie Mountain is known for its rich biodiversity and unique geographical location. It serves as a crucial stopover site for numerous birds of prey migrating south for the winter, earning it the name “Bird Lodge”. Snake Island is the only habitat for nearly 20,000 Shedao Island pit-vipers (or Gloydius shedaoensis, a unique species in China).
Every autumn, 372 species and tens of millions of birds from Siberia, the grasslands of Mongolia, and the northeastern regions of China fly over the Snake Island and Laotie Mountain areas. Among these, 21 species are classified as national first-class protected species, with an additional 65 species classified as national second-class protected species.
