During this autumn season, the Liaoning Provincial Museum has once again launched an overseas exhibition tour. The exhibition “Picturesque Rivers and Mountains: An Immersive Journey into Ancient Chinese Landscape Art from the Liaoning Provincial Museum” is currently on display in Santa Barbara, California, the US. Co-organized by the Liaoning Provincial Museum and the Silicon Valley Asian Art Center, the exhibition features the exquisite reproductions of 40 ancient Chinese landscape paintings. The Liaoning Provincial Museum boasts a rich collection of calligraphy and painting works, and the original manuscripts of the artworks exhibited in this exhibition are all housed in the museum. These masterpieces in art history are now presented to North American viewers in the form of exquisite reproductions for the first time.
The exhibited works include famous paintings such as Waiting for Ferry in Summer Mountains, Luxuriant Forest Among Distant Peaks, and Ancient Trees Casting Shades, spanning from the Five Dynasties to the Ming and Qing dynasties. They are representative masterpieces by renowned artists such as Shen Zhou, Wen Zhengming, Tang Yin, Qiu Ying, Shi Tao, Dong Yuan, Liu Songnian, Zhao Mengfu, and Dong Qichang. The exhibition will run until September 17, 2025.
In early September, Chinese and foreign art scholars and students from art academies will gather at the Silicon Valley Asian Art Center to discuss the essence and legacy of Chinese paintings. Additionally, the “Landscape Painting Workshop” will also be held, inviting art experts to deliver lectures to local viewers on how to appreciate ancient Chinese landscape paintings.
Wang Xiaowen, curator of the Liaoning Provincial Museum, stated that although the exhibited works are reproductions, they match the original pieces in size and achieve near-identical details through high-definition printing technology. The Liaoning Provincial Museum plans to continue its exhibition of ancient Chinese landscape paintings in the Silicon Valley Asian Art Center in early 2026, aiming to foster cultural exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations. Through Chinese landscape paintings, overseas viewers will be able to perceive the cultural roots and aesthetic philosophy of the Chinese nation, as well as appreciate the charm of China’s outstanding traditional culture.
