On the evening of Sept 27, the “Liaoning-Jiangsu Collaboration: Harmony Between the North and South” gala featuring traditional Chinese opera excerpts was held at the Liaoning Grand Theatre. Opera artists from the Shenyang Peking Opera House, Shenyang Pingju Opera House, Kunshan Contemporary Kunqu Theatre, and Yancheng Huaiju Opera Troupe gathered in Shenyang, Liaoning Province to present four representative opera genres from the north and south. The performances offered a striking contrast between the graceful, melodious style of Jiangnan operas and the spirited, bold style of Liaoning operas. Four specific excerpts—Kunqu Opera’s The Peony Pavilion, Pingju Opera’s The Teapot Plot, Huaiju Opera’s Ganjiao, and Peking Opera’s Hanjinkou—drew thunderous applause from the audience. Through this joint showcase, opera troupes from Liaoning and Jiangsu demonstrated the cultural resonance shared by the two provinces.
